Experience of work with "Ultrascan-2004" remote monitoring device
"Ultrascan-2004" device has been tested at Tomsk Electric Power Supply Division of West-Siberian Railway since 2004. About two thousand contact-line supports, power supply lines of central and automatic block systems and longitudinal power supply lines at sections with direct and alternating currents were checked during the testing. As the result 25 defective insulators were detected, 12 ones were unmounted. Among them 5 glass pin-type support insulators were found split. Four other ones did not stand high-voltage tests. Besides, the device testing was carried out at traction and transformer substations.
Maximum efficiency of the device operation was gained during the condition inspection of lines insulation and equipment of dispatch devices of 6-35kV at the distance of up to 15m. At dispatch device of 110kV the efficiency of "Ultrascan-2004" device is not so high because of interference of corona and surface discharges.



In addition to testing of isolation condition one more function of the device was discovered during the testing: detection of defects of aerial circuits reinforcement and contact system. So, at longitudinal power supply line of 27.5kV at section of alternating current specific signals of electric discharges of average power level were detected at one of the supports. During further exploitation of the section a break of the line took place on this support as a result of its rubbing in a loose saddle. Thus, the device detected the corona discharges from the torn ends of wires long before the emergency breakdown.
The effectiveness of the device consists in comparatively narrow directional diagram and low level of reception of surrounding noise in comparison with analogous devices applied nowadays. Using of attachment which makes a directional diagram even more narrow allows to detect the source of noise at a farther distance.
The device is rather simple in operation though an operator should have some training and skill. It is necessary to be able not only to define the direction but also to differentiate the source of noise by changing the position.
Besides, an operator has to differentiate by ear and estimate by scale the level of a useful signal and its character. For example, firstly, defective electric equipment signal can be detected only when there is operating (or testing) voltage across it.
Secondly, this signal should be distinguished from unwanted sounds by characteristic low-frequency (50Hz) signal resembling intermittent sound of electric welding.

To sources of unwanted sounds which are not features of a defect belong noise of self-oscillations of wires and fibre-optic cables, mechanical creak in details of armor and some other defects. All the other noise with low-frequency modulation (50Hz) even if they do not show any defect, prove to be the sources of interference for electric communication and need taking measures for their elimination.
In general according to the results of testing of "Ultrascan-2004" device it is necessary to mention that the it is reliable in operation (the testing was carried out at -25C - +30C). It does not require any special maintenance (except for recharging of the battery).

The only thing which could be recommended to the developers is to supply the device with an additional
narrow-band antenna and embedded filter for the possibility of mode of nonelectric noise filtering.
